Fruits Basket is the story of Tohru Honda, a young woman who
decides to live in a tent in the woods after her mother passes away, choosing
to provide for herself rather than inconvenience her distant relatives.
However, she soon finds out that these woods are the property of the rich and
influential Sohma family. The three
bachelors living there take Tohru in after her tiny tent is buried in a
landslide, and it isn’t long before Tohru realizes there’s something unusual
about the family…
The Sohmas have been cursed for hundreds of years. Thirteen family members in each generation are possessed by a spirit from the Chinese zodiac: Rat, Ox, Dog, Boar, all 12 animals plus the unlucky Cat of the old folktale. In certain circumstances such as stress, illness, or most strangely, holding a member of the opposite sex, they transform into their respective animal.
After discussing the situation with the mysterious head of the Sohma family, Tohru is allowed to stay with Yuki, Kyo and Shigure (the Rat, Cat, and Dog) provided she keep the family secret. Needless to say, living in a human zoo can get a little absurd, but the Sohma family secret isn’t all fun, games, and cat-and-mouse chases.
There are darker depths to the Sohma legacy that threaten to swallow up the Zodiac members: a bond greater than family and dangerous to all who interfere with it. As time passes, Tohru discovers more about the Sohmas and the true nature of the curse, forming new bonds of love and trust within the family so strong they may yet break the curse…or else destroy the young spirits so desperate to change their fates.
We now invite you to be a part of this exciting story. There will be laughter, there will be tears, and in the end, a tale of great transformations. ^_^
